A Very Different Sort of Mini......

The Easter Bunny delivered an Easter Egg with a difference this year. Here is my latest mini, she is 8 weeks old and as cute as a button. Her name is Lily and she is a cross between a pug and a shih tzu.
I have been thinking about getting a dog for a while now as I have been increasingly concerned that, with my youngest son off to University in September, I could easily succumb to my natural agoraphobic this winter.
I have only ever had cats and am not a great dog lover. They growl, they bite, they bark, they smell, they are a tie, they do huge poops, they pee in the house and they shed hair all over the house......Some of the many reasons I have never wanted a dog!!
But....they all need to be walked and that was the main incentive for me. A dog, even a very small one, will make sure I go for a walk every day. As good as it sounds to spend the winter in my PJ's making minis, I don't think that is the best way to deal with my empty nest!
So after months of googling such questions as: "What dog thinks it's a cat?" and "Which breed of dog barks the least?" I finally discovered the pug cross breeds. She looks a bit like Gizmo from that wonderful "Gremlins" film but as is the way of puppies everyone has fallen in love with her.
It has also been the perfect weekend to bring her home, lots of the family around and the most glorious weather.
The biggest surprise has been the similarity between bringing the puppy home and my own babies. Feed them, clean them, up in the night ( to pee for the puppy, to feed for the babies!!), plus all the kit! A whole new world of gizmos and gadgets.
At the moment we are having lots of fun with her even if I do keep walking around the house sniffing!!
Now are puppies allowed in at the Kensington Festival?
Hope you have all enjoyed your Easter break.

  2. She's adorable! Shih tzu's don't shed as a rule, as you know I have two of them. Puppies are just like babies, you're up in the night with them, the whole works. Enjoy her, she's lovely.

  3. Hi Deb, it was your two cuties that first introduced me to what shih tzus look like. Not sure what sort of hair Lily will have as pugs shed loads. She is quite fluffy at the moment so I am hoping she will be more shih tzu in that respect.

  4. She's soooo adorable! I've seen this breed before, but like you never ever had a dog for the same reasons! There are lots of dog breeds that I like, but they seem such hard work compared to a cat...so I will be watching you to see how you flair! ;oP

Lots and lots to keep you busy now!! I missed your last post..been so busy!

Keep me informed on Potage's and happy sniffing! :o)

  7. Hi Michelle, I will definitely keep you informed! I am lucky that I am able to stay at home with her which seems to be a must with small dogs for the first few months at least. This is a whole new world to me!

My cat seems completely dis-interested which is a good sign apparently, although he has had the odd swipe!

  9. Hi Catherine, there are always a few 'handbag' dogs at Kensington so if I can't get a sitter she will have to come with me!
It will certainly make the day more interesting!

  13. Oh Janice, she is gorgeous!! absolutely adorable!! We have always had dogs in our family & I would never be without one. They love you unconditionally & are fantastic companions (sometimes better than having a man about the house, lol). I hope you have lots of fun with her & patience with the training, & you will build a great friendship with her :o)
    Hugs, Kerry.x.

  14. So cute! I can see why you fell for her :) And compliments on the brave decision! Getting a dog when you're a true cat person is quite a step, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

  15. As a complete and utter dog lover myself all I can say is I am so jealous. I love pugs as a breed and think that cross with Shit zu will be cracking!! I have 2 ministure schnauzers which don't moult at all, hard work to keep their coats right though. You will love being a dog owner, I'm sure, she will steal your heart. Best Easter present ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JAin see you at Kensington.

  16. Ahhh shes so so cute I want her!! Our little baby is 6 months old and bigger than a fully grown lab already so the children are already moaning they want a 'proper puppy' as well so Im sure Lola will be showing John pictures of Lily to try and persuade him to get another dog and one that stays little! It really is like having babies again isnt it I thought the same thing! having to try and suss what her barking meant, was she hungry, thirsty, did she need a wee! All fun and games but it does settle down and they find a routine so quickly, thank goodness! Lucky you being able to take her with you, thats our 1 big problem, the tie of not being able to leave her and do the things we used to do! Have so much fun with her, shes just adorable and love the name, one of my favourite names ever! Kate xxx

  18. Absolutely adorable - the one thing about a dog is they are always there for you no matter what :)

Still enjoying her at the moment! No serious disasters yet, but my daughter goes back to uni tomorrow and she has been the main entertainer......

  20. She is adorable, congratulation on your new addition to the family.

My mother in law has a pug and yes they shed loads all the time so I hope she takes after the shih tzu in her.

Does she do the wheezing like a Pug? as that can get very loud in hot weather, but sometimes a little drop of milk can calm it down.

  23. She is adorable and don't let our experience with Sasha put you off. She was a very hyper active dog that was suited more to children. Both her parents were very hyper and undisciplined so we should have realized that she might be too. Our other dog Brandy is a delight. She is a shih tzu mix and does not shed but needs to be groomed regularly. She is fairly quiet and gets along very well with our two cats. In fact Rusty and her sleep together a lot. She does not like other dogs and that was part of the problem with Sasha. They really did not get along. The training process with any puppy is hard and it seems so long but once you get them trained, a dog makes a wonderful companion and it is fun taking them for walks.
